Ensure confidentiality
Handle confidential information with care. In the digital age, where cyber attacks and data breaches are becoming more common, protecting confidential information is even more important. Customers expect their data to be secure, and breaches can cause enormous financial, legal and reputational damage.
DSI core principles in practice
What can you learn from this DSI Disciplinary Committee ruling DSI-2022-001?
For several years, a senior relationship manager in private banking sent customer and business information from his employer to his private e-mail address for the purpose of working from home. Even after the bank’s internal rules were tightened, he continued to do this. Only after he left the bank did it become clear that he had stored large amounts of confidential data, including data on more than 1,200 customers, on his private computer.
The Disciplinary Committee ruled that sending and storing confidential information outside the bank’s secure IT environment was a serious violation of the DSI Code of Conduct. The relationship manager should have understood that this action entailed significant risks, regardless of his intentions. He thus acted in breach of the obligation to Ensure confidentiality and was given an official reprimand.
Always handle confidential information with care, even if you have good intentions.
What does this mean to you?
Ensuring confidentiality requires conscious and careful action, especially when working remotely. Always use your organization’s secure IT environment and do not send client or company data to private accounts. By staying alert to applicable guidelines and strictly adhering to them, you protect not only your organization and your clients, but also your own professional integrity.
