On Thursday, October 1, the focus was on AML practice for professionals in the financial sector. The VU FEC-Risk Expert Program, Leaders in Finance Academy, and the DSI Foundation organized an inspiring and informative day in Amsterdam. More than 100 AML professionals gathered to update their knowledge and fulfill their mandatory PE requirements for 2026.

Mandatory and Valuable for DSI AML Registrants

The program served as the mandatory Continuing Professional Education (PE) component for professionals in the DSI AML Register to meet the requirements for 2026. This requirement took effect for the first time this year.

The turnout was large and diverse: with over 100 participants, there was a good mix of banks, insurance companies, asset managers, regulators, accounting firms, law firms, and trust companies.

Content, in-depth coverage, and expert speakers

Together with experts from academia, the legal profession, regulatory agencies, and law enforcement, the topic was explored in depth. Participants gained up-to-date insights and concrete tools for their daily work. The program featured the following topics and speakers:

  • AMLA & AMLR (Current Developments and Outlook): Melissa van den Broek (Comply | Explain and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) updated the audience on the latest European regulations and outlook.
  • Lessons on offboarding from case law: Frank ‘t Hart (Hart Advocaten N.V.) shared important insights on how to avoid legal pitfalls when parting ways with clients.
  • The Latest Money Laundering Trends & TBML: Gerard (FIOD / Task Force TBML) discussed Trade-Based Money Laundering, criminal third-party payments, and the Cash Compensation Model.
  • Crypto, MiCA, and the Future of the Gatekeeper: Judith de Boer (Hertoghs Advocaten) took the audience on a journey from crypto privacy to the impact of MiCA on the financial sector.
  • AI in the AML Field: Evert Haasdijk (Deloitte and the University of Amsterdam) discussed the opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence for FEC practice.

More than just knowledge

In addition to delving deeper into the subject matter, the day was focused on meeting others, networking, and sharing practical experiences. The participants’ feedback was very positive:

“A very successful and interesting afternoon. Time flew by, which shows just how engaging the program was. The selection of speakers and topics was so interesting that it was hard to choose.”

Many thanks to the organizers and partners—VU Financial Economic Crime – Risk Expert and Leaders in Finance Academy—for the enjoyable collaboration and successful afternoon.
